Farmers Markets Starting in May
Farmers Markets Starting in May
We source our Jumbo Broilers from a local WI hatchery. Chicks arrive here 2-3 days old. We start them out on a Homemade Organic Electrolyte Drink (Garlic, Honey, ACV). The chicks start off in the brooder until 3 weeks old when they start to be able to regulate body temperature. They are then moved out on pasture in Salatin Style Chicken Tractors. They are moved each day to a New Salad Bar of Grasses and Bugs. We supplement feed with a No Soy No Corn Certified Organic Feed that we get shipped in from Western WI and add Organic ACV to their Fresh Water Daily. We grow out our birds 3-4 weeks longer than a typical conventional farmer, ensuring a healthy happy Jumbo Broiler!
Our semi-rare heritage breed Tamworth pigs (commonly called “the bacon pig”) whose meat is leaner than more common commercial breeds. These pigs started out in paddocks over grown with all the deliciousness of Mother Natures great seed bank to help re-establish the paddocks and will move out to the Salad Bar of Grasses Nature provided shortly. We supplement with a No Soy No Corn Organic Feed along with any extras from the Garden Harvests & Eggs. Boy do they like the Eggs!
Backyard Acres will be growing in three systems environments: hydroponics, greenhouses, & field crops following Organic Certification Principles & Practices
Some vegetables can be grown year-round in our hydroponics room, such as lettuces, kale, arugula, and microgreens (e.g., peas, sunflower, cilantro, radish).
We will do season extension via two heated greenhouses, actively growing at least from March – November.
In our field gardens, we grow on a more traditional schedule
We Raise Our Broad Breasted Bronze Turkeys out on Pasture at week 5 using similar No Soy No Corn Organic Feed and ACV in their fresh water Daily. Turkeys are a little more sensitive as young poults than their chicken counterparts. They have an excellent conformation and high meat yield due to its natural fat layering. The bronze resemble the wild turkeys, having a dark metallic sheen and range of copper and brown variations of color and white edging on the tail feathers.
Most of our laying hens this year are Red Star, known for their high productivity in large to jumbo sized eggs in varying shades of brown. They also become stewing chickens for fabulous pot pies, chicken & dumplings, and slow-cooker meals when their egg-laying days are over. All our laying hens are free-range birds supplemented with a No Soy No Corn Certified Organic Feed. Their are 5 Easter Eggers that we brought with us from Sheboygan that lay varying shades of Green/Blue Eggs. Check your Dozen to see if you got a Green Egg Today!
We are Excited to Welcome 4 Katahdin Ewe's to lead the way in starting our Herd. Sis, Kitty, Big Red & Brownie (From Left to Right) will arrive September 2021. Our ladies will be raised out on rotational pasture during summer and supplemented with Organic Hay & Fodder during the Winter along with free choice minerals and daily ACV in their water to ensure optimal health. We look forward to our first Lamb harvest Summer of 2022. Until then we are partnering with other local Lamb Farmers!
*We are looking for a Katahdin Ram for Fall of 2022
